My child already studies IB or A-Level Mathematics. Why do they need separate TMUA preparation?
IB Mathematics and A-Level Mathematics provide much of the mathematical foundation required for the TMUA. However, strong performance in school mathematics does not automatically translate into a strong TMUA score.
The TMUA requires students to apply familiar mathematical ideas to unfamiliar problems, identify efficient solution strategies, reason precisely, and work under significant time pressure. These skills are not usually developed systematically through the standard IB or A-Level curriculum.
Specialist TMUA preparation therefore does not replace a student’s mathematics education. It develops the additional problem-solving, reasoning, speed and exam strategy required to perform effectively in the admissions test.
How much does the TMUA overlap with IB Mathematics and A-Level Mathematics?
There is significant overlap in the underlying mathematics, particularly with IB Mathematics AA HL and A-Level Mathematics. Students with a strong mathematical foundation are therefore well placed to begin preparing for the TMUA.
However, the overlap is much greater in mathematical content than in question style and assessment demands.
The TMUA is not simply an extension of a school mathematics examination. Students must often recognise the underlying structure of an unfamiliar problem, determine an efficient approach quickly, and avoid spending too much time on methods that are mathematically valid but inefficient under test conditions.
This is why a student can be excellent at IB or A-Level Mathematics and still require specific preparation for the TMUA.
What is different about TMUA questions compared with normal IB or A-Level Mathematics questions?

TMUA questions are designed to test whether a student can:

No. Further Mathematics is not a prerequisite for the TMUA.

Further Mathematics may provide some students with additional mathematical experience, but it does not automatically guarantee a strong TMUA performance.
